Immunization After Care
Components of vaccines are weakened or killed, so they are unlikely to cause any serious illness. Risks of vaccinations are minor compared to the risks of diseases they are preventing
What To Expect:
- Redness, swelling and soreness at the injection site
- May be more fussy than normal
- May sleep more than normal (longer nap, earlier bedtime)
- Fever may occur for (24-48) hours after injections
- For MMR and Chicken pox vaccines the reaction can occur within 10 to 14 days- of getting the vaccine.
Important to Know:
- Up until age 1, vaccinations are given only on the thighs of the legs. MMR and Chickens pox vaccine are given in the fatty part in the back of the arm.
- Can give Tylenol or Ibuprofen (if >6 months) after vaccination for any irritability or low fever -We do not recommend giving pain reliever prior to vaccinations
- Cool cloth to the injection site or a bath may feel good on the legs
- Severe reactions to immunizations are extremely rare!
When to call the clinic:
- Unusually high-pitched cry
- Crying for greater than 3 hours and cannot be consoled
- Fever 103 or greater
- Fever that lasts longer than 2 days
- Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking
- Limp or pale
- Seizure activity (jerking, shaking, or twitching)
