Protecting Your Little Ones from Respiratory Illnesses

As respiratory illness season approaches, it’s a good time to review the latest ways to protect your children, from infants to teens, against serious respiratory infections.

Nirsevimab (Beyfortus): A New Level of Protection for Infants

If you’ve heard about the Nirsevimab (Beyfortus) immunization, you’re not alone. This new, long-acting monoclonal antibody is designed to help protect newborns and infants under 8 months of age from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) – one of the most common causes of severe respiratory illness in young children.

Each year, approximately 33 million children under age five develop bronchiolitis (a lower respiratory tract infection), most often caused by RSV. Of these, about 3.2 million require hospitalization, and around 100,000 deaths occur globally due to RSV-related complications.

While Nirsevimab doesn’t prevent RSV infection itself, it has been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization or the need for medical care by 83% for lower respiratory symptoms. It’s a significant step forward in protecting our tiniest patients – and a long-awaited tool for parents and pediatricians alike.

If your child qualifies, talk to us about whether Nirsevimab is right for your family.

Flu and COVID Vaccines: Don’t Skip This Season’s Protection

In addition to Nirsevimab, flu and COVID vaccines remain important for children and teens. These vaccines help prevent severe illness, reduce the spread of infection, and keep school and sports seasons on track for your family.

For nurse-only vaccine visits, Child and Teen Medical Center follows these policies:

  • Child must be at least 6 months old
  • Must be up to date on well-child exams
  • Children with asthma must be up to date on Asthma Medication Reviews

Call 763-333-7733 to schedule flu or COVID vaccinations, or ask about combining them into one visit.
